Field note

Why we only work on one brand of refrigeration

One manufacturer, one product category, no cooking equipment. The scope is deliberate and so is the disclaimer that goes with it.

A wine column with its lower grille removed, the technician working at the machine compartment at floor level.
Knowing where the grille clips are on this cabinet is not general knowledge. It is the whole argument.

Most appliance companies in this county will work on anything with a plug. That is a reasonable business, and for a lot of household repairs it is the right one. We have gone the other way, and it is worth explaining the reasoning rather than dressing it up as a slogan.

Diagnosis is pattern recognition

The useful part of a technician is not the toolbox. It is the number of times they have seen the specific thing in front of them before.

A generalist walking into a built-in refrigeration fault is reasoning from principles: heat has to be rejected, air has to move, water has to drain, and the control has to be reading something true. Those principles are correct and they will get to an answer eventually. A specialist is doing something different — recognising that this particular combination of a warm compartment, a normal display reading and a slab in the ice bin has a small number of likely explanations, and checking those first.

The practical difference shows up in visit count. Narrow experience is what lets us carry the parts the phone call made likely, rather than the parts that were merely possible, and single-visit repairs are almost entirely a function of arriving with the right thing in the van.

One product category, not one appliance manufacturer’s whole catalogue

There is a distinction here that trips people up when they call, so it is worth being blunt about it.

Sub-Zero makes refrigeration. Built-in refrigerators and freezers, columns, undercounter units, drawers, wine storage. That is the entire scope of what we work on, and it is the entire scope of what that manufacturer makes in this category.

We do not repair ovens, cooktops, ranges, dishwashers or ventilation, from any brand. If your kitchen has other high-end appliances that need attention, we are not the call. Saying so on the phone costs us a job occasionally and saves everyone a wasted afternoon considerably more often.

The other reason: honesty about what we are not

Specialising in one manufacturer’s products creates an impression that has to be actively managed, and we would rather manage it in writing than let it sit.

We are an independent repair company. We are not affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by Sub-Zero or its parent company. We have no factory relationship of any kind, we do not receive work through the manufacturer, and we do not hold any status conferred by them. Using the brand name is how we tell you which appliances we service — that is the only thing it means here.

What we do hold is real. Our technicians are EPA Section 608 certified for refrigerant handling, which is a federal requirement for anyone opening a sealed system, and it is verifiable. We are licensed and insured for work in Clay and Duval counties. Parts we fit are genuine OEM. Those are the claims we are willing to make, and the reason the list is short is that everything on it is true.

What that means for you

Practically, three things.

You get someone who has seen your fault before, which is worth more than any certificate would be. You get a straight answer when the job is outside our scope, rather than a technician learning your appliance at your expense. And you get a company with no relationship to the manufacturer, which means no pressure to steer you toward a replacement unit and no incentive attached to any particular outcome.

The trade-off is that we are useless to you for half your kitchen. We think that is the right trade, and we would rather you knew before you dialled.
