That single question removes most of the possibilities before any panel comes
off.

## Why the split matters

Many Sub-Zero built-ins run two independent sealed systems, one for the fresh
food compartment and one for the freezer. That design is the reason a household
can lose the refrigerator side entirely while the freezer stays rock solid, and
it is also why "the whole thing is dying" is usually wrong. Two systems rarely
fail together. When both compartments drift at the same time, the cause is
almost always something they share — the condenser, the airflow around the
cabinet, the power supply, or the control.

So the split is diagnostic:

- **Fresh food warm, freezer fine.** Look at the fresh-food evaporator, its fan,
  the air path, and the defrost cycle on that side.
- **Freezer warm, fresh food fine.** Same reasoning, other system, and check the
  ice bin for melt-and-refreeze evidence while you are in there.
- **Both drifting together.** Shared cause. Start at the condenser.
- **Cold at the back, warm at the door.** That is not a refrigeration fault at
  all. That is air movement, loading, or a door that is not sealing.

## The condenser is the first thing, not the last

A refrigerator does not make cold. It moves heat out of the cabinet and rejects
it into your kitchen, and everything the machine can do downstream depends on
that working. So heat rejection is where a not-cooling call starts, not where it
ends up after two other parts have been tried.

The condenser sits behind the upper grille on most built-ins, at the top of the
cabinet, in the warmest air in the room. Pet hair, carpet fibre and the fine dust
an air handler circulates for most of a Florida year build into a mat across the
fins. Airflow drops. Head pressure rises. The compressor runs longer for less
result, and the first thing the household notices is that the milk is turning
early.

This is a gradual failure, which is why people describe it as "it has been a
little warm for a while." A unit that has been quietly overworking for two years
is also a unit whose compressor and fan motors have taken two years of unnecessary
load, so the cleaning is not cosmetic maintenance. It is the repair.

## When it is not the condenser

An evaporator buried in ice points at defrost, not at the sealed system — the
cooling capacity is there, the air just cannot get past the frost. A fan that has
seized or that is running but stalling under load produces a compartment that is
cold near the evaporator and warm everywhere else. A door left ajar by a
mispositioned bin, or a gasket that has taken a set after fifteen years, drags
humid Florida air into the cabinet all day and makes every other symptom worse.

Genuine sealed-system faults — a refrigerant leak, a restriction, a failed
compressor — do happen, and they are the reason refrigerant work here is done by
EPA Section 608 certified technicians. But they are a minority of these calls,
and diagnosing one before ruling out the four cheaper causes above is how people
end up quoted for a repair they did not need.
